Martin Scorsese's Quaalude Adventures

CONAN Highlight: He hired an on-set expert for "Wolf of Wall Street", but Martin could have just drawn on his own 1970s experience.

Transcript:

CONAN: IN "THE WOLF OF WALL STREET" ONE OF THE SCENES THAT BLEW ME AWAY IS LEONARDO DICAPRIO'S CHARACTER AND A LOT IN THE FILM ARE USING QUAALUDES AND A SCENE THAT IS FANTASTIC WHERE HE HAS TAKEN SO MANY THAT HE CAN'T BE UNDERSTOOD.
MARTIN SCORSESE: RIGHT.
CONAN: I READ THAT YOU GOT AN EXPERT TO COME ON THE SET AND INSTRUCT LEO ABOUT HOW ONE BEHAVES WHEN ONE HAS HAD TOO MANY QUALUDES.
MARTIN SCORSESE: YES, WE DID.
CONAN: WHO IS THE EXPERT?
MARTIN SCORSESE: I CAN'T SAY.
BUT I COULD PUT A FEW WORDS IN THERE MYSELF.
[LAUGHTER]
MARTIN SCORSESE: ALTHOUGH I NEVER --
CONAN: YOU HAD A LITTLE EXPERIENCE YOURSELF.
MARTIN SCORSESE: 35 YEARS AGO, YEAH.
AT THAT TIME THEY WERE LEGAL AND I WAS ACTUALLY PRESCRIBED A QUAALUDE FOR FEAR OF FLYING.
WHEN YOU TOOK THIS PILL IT WAS LIKE A FIVE HOUR FLIGHT, YOU TOOK THAT PILL, YOU DIDN'T CARE WHERE YOU WERE.
IN FACT, FINALLY IT WOUND DOWN BY THE TIME YOU LANDED THANKFULLY BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO HUG EVERYBODY AND THAT SORT OF THING.
AND YOU WERE CRYING.
[LAUGHTER]
I'M NOT KIDDING.
CONAN: I WANT TO TAKE A FLIGHT WITH YOU.
WE'RE JUST HUGGING EACH OTHER AND YOU ARE CRYING.
THAT SOUNDS LIKE FUN.
BUT DON'T DO IT, KIDS.
MARTIN SCORSESE: DON'T DO IT, KIDS.
CONAN: YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PUT THAT IN.
MARTIN SCORSESE: YEAH, PLEASE.
